If you’ve done the research, you’ve had it drilled into your head: sleep on your left side.

But what if, no matter how hard you try, you can’t get comfortable?

It’s true, the best sleeping position while being pregnant is on your side. But if you aren’t sleeping well in that position, the side effects can be even worse.

Some consequences of not sleeping well while pregnant include high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. It may also affect your baby’s growth.

It can feel like an impossible dilemma. If you’re sleeping in the wrong position, you’re hurting your baby. But if you lay in the right position, you aren’t sleeping, and that can hurt your baby, too.

So, if sleeping on your left side isn’t working for you, what are some sleeping positions when pregnant that you can try?

Sleep how you’re most comfortable.

In the end, you shouldn’t worry if you wake up on your stomach or back. If you try waking yourself up every five minutes to get to the “right” position, you’ll wind up doing more harm than good.

But what if you do wake up and find yourself on your back? It’s easy to worry about how long you’ve been sleeping like that, and if you’ve unintentionally done any damage to yourself or your baby.

But that worry is probably unfounded.

Your body will know what feels right and what doesn’t. Often, you’ll wake up almost immediately after rolling into that position, because sleeping on your back or stomach is uncomfortable.

Don’t panic. Just roll over and go back to sleep.

Try sleeping on your right side.

Most doctors recommend sleeping on your left side as opposed to your right because your liver is on your right side. They worry that your uterus might do damage to it.

But this is more of a safety precaution than anything else.

Many believe that there is no evidence to suggest that sleeping on your right side does any damage. So if you absolutely cannot get comfortable on your left side, you can try sleeping on your right.

Of course, even though it’s just a precaution, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you’re having trouble sleeping, it’s better to talk to your doctor to see what they recommend.
